Free monthly budget template
This free monthly budget template is an Excel file with a planned and an actual column for 27 income and spending categories. Totals, the difference per category and what's left over calculate themselves.
What's in the file
- A summary of income, spending and what's left
- Planned, Actual and Difference for each category
- 20 spending and 7 income categories
A Google Sheets version is coming soon.
How it's calculated
Fill in the Planned column at the start of the month. As the month goes on, add what you really spent in the Actual column. The Difference column shows where you're over or under, and the summary at the top shows income, spending and what's left.
The categories are the same 27 that Where Went sets up for new accounts, so you can move to the app later without changing how you group things.
- Works in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets (File → Import).
- All totals use plain SUM formulas you can see and change.
- Amounts are in euro; change the cell format for another currency.

Questions people ask
Is the budget template really free?

Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets, or use File → Import in a blank sheet.
Can I add my own categories?
Yes. Insert a row inside the expense or income block and the SUM totals pick it up.
What's the difference between a budget and an expense tracker?
A budget is the plan; an expense tracker records what really happened. This template does both in two columns, and Where Went does the tracking part for you every day.
