The basics

What is Where Went?

Where Went is a free expense tracker that runs in the browser. You enter your income and expenses by hand, without connecting a bank, and it shows your net worth, how the month is going and where your money went by category. It's available in English, Bulgarian and German.

Is Where Went really free?

Yes. Every feature is free: there's no paid plan, no trial and no card to enter. One independent developer builds it, and it's kept free by voluntary donations, not ads.

Who is Where Went for?

For anyone who wants to know where their money goes without giving an app their bank login: people tracking a salary and monthly spending, students, freelancers, and anyone who keeps cash and several accounts.

How do I get started?

Sign in with Google, add your accounts (bank, cash, card or savings) with what each holds today, and log your income and expenses as they happen. It takes about two minutes, and 50 categories are ready to use.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Where Went runs in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac. If you use it every day, you can install it from the browser and it opens like an app. See how to install it.

Privacy and security

Does Where Went connect to my bank?

No, on purpose. You enter each transaction yourself. Where Went never asks for bank details, can't see your bank account and can't move money. Read why manual tracking can beat bank sync.

Who can see my data?

Only you. Your data is tied to your Google account, and the app's pages are kept out of search engines. Where Went doesn't sell data and shows no ads.

Where is my data stored?

In the EU. Where Went's database runs on servers in Frankfurt, Germany. The Privacy Policy lists every provider involved.

Why do I sign in with Google?

So you don't need another password, and your data is tied to an account only you control. Where Went only receives your name, email address and profile picture from Google.

Can I delete my account and my data?

Yes, yourself, at any time. In Settings, delete your account and your accounts, categories and transactions are deleted right away and for good.

Can I hide amounts when someone is looking at my screen?

Yes. Tap the eye icon at the top of the app and every amount turns into stars until you tap it again. The choice is remembered on that device.

Tracking money

How do I add an expense or income?

Tap Add expense or Add income (on a phone, the round + at the bottom). Enter the amount, pick a category and an account, and save. The date is today unless you change it.

What is a transfer?

Moving money between your own accounts, for example from your bank account to cash after an ATM withdrawal. A transfer changes both balances but doesn't count as income or spending.

Which categories are there, and can I change them?

Where Went comes with 50 categories: 30 for spending, such as Groceries, Rent & housing, Transport and Pharmacy, and 20 for income, such as Salary, Bonus and Freelance. Rename them, change their icon and color, archive the ones you don't use, or add your own.

Can I track cash and several accounts?

Yes. Add as many accounts as you need: bank, cash, card, savings and investment. Each one has its own balance and currency, and your net worth adds them all up.

Which currencies does Where Went support?

Euro (EUR) is the default. You can also use BGN, USD, GBP, CHF, PLN, RON, CZK, HUF, SEK, NOK and DKK. Each account has one currency, and monthly totals are shown per currency. To convert amounts, use the free currency converter.

Can I import transactions from my bank or a spreadsheet?

Not at the moment. There's no bank connection and no file import: you add entries by hand, which takes a few seconds each.

Can I scan receipts?

No. Where Went has no receipt scanning: you type in the amount, the category and the account, which takes a few seconds per expense.

Can I see and edit past months?

Yes. The Transactions page has a month switcher and filters by account, category and type. Any transaction can be edited or deleted, and balances update right away.

Budgets and insights

Can I set a budget?

Yes. Set one spending budget for the month or for the week (Monday to Sunday), and the dashboard shows what's left and how much that is per day. You can leave out fixed costs like rent. See the monthly budget planner.

Can I set a limit per category?

No. Where Went has one spending budget for the month or the week, not separate limits per category. You can leave categories such as rent out of it.

How does Where Went compare this month with last month?

Under income, expenses and savings, the dashboard shows the change against the same days of last month, for example ↓ €300 (60%) less than last month. On the 12th it compares the 1st to the 12th of both months, so the comparison is fair from the first day.

What does the dashboard show?

Your net worth across all accounts; this month's income, expenses and savings; spending by category, largest first; your accounts' balances; and your latest transactions.

Phones and computers

Does Where Went work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Samsung Internet or any other current browser. Add it to your home screen to get an icon. There's no app store download and no APK.

Can I use it on several devices?

Yes. Sign in with the same Google account on your phone, tablet and computer, and you see the same data everywhere.

Does Where Went work offline?

No. Every entry is saved to your account right away, so you need an internet connection.

How long do I stay signed in?

As long as you open Where Went at least once every 90 days on that device. After that, you sign in with Google again.

Compared with other options

Why use Where Went instead of a spreadsheet?

Totals, balances and charts update on their own, and adding an expense on a phone takes seconds. If you prefer a spreadsheet, there's a free expense tracker template for Excel and Google Sheets.

How is it different from budget apps that connect to my bank?

Where Went never needs your bank login, works with any bank and with cash, and is free. The trade-off is that you enter transactions yourself. See budget apps without a bank connection.

Is there a shared household or family view?

Not yet. Each person uses Where Went with their own Google account.
